About us

Sawt Foundation for Development is an independent, non-governmental organization with a focus on human rights, culture, and media. It has been registered in Yemen since 2010 and in Germany since 2020. The foundation creates safe and inclusive spaces and platforms for expression and participation, promotes the values of justice, dignity, and fairness in public discourse, and focuses particularly on empowering underrepresented groups – especially women, youth, and persons with disabilities – to ensure their fair and active presence in centers of influence and decision-making.

The foundation’s vision is rooted in the conviction that arts, culture, and media are essential instruments for driving positive social change and reshaping narratives towards greater equality and inclusion. Its mission is implemented through seven interconnected areas of work: media and narrative transformation; culture and arts; research and knowledge production; cultural exchange and social integration; capacity building and education; networking and advocacy; as well as partnerships and alliances. Through these areas, Sawt develops a just cultural and human rights-based discourse grounded in lived experiences, contributing to more balanced representation and creating equal opportunities for expression and participation.

Sawt is committed to good governance, transparency, and ethical and social accountability, and activates transparent, participatory, and regular monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. The foundation’s work is guided by a comprehensive system of international human rights agreements and frameworks, which are directly reflected in the design and implementation of its programs. These include: the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the Global Youth Charter, the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), the SPHERE Handbook for humanitarian practice, and UNESCO’s principles on cultural diversity and artistic freedom.

The impact of the foundation’s work is measured through sustainable cultural and social transformations that enable underrepresented groups to actively participate in public discourse and to help shape more just policies. This is reflected in strengthening the presence of these groups in media and the arts as actors rather than merely subjects; developing alternative narratives based on lived experiences; supporting inclusive policies that uphold human dignity; creating tangible models for intersectional participation in issues such as peacebuilding, climate justice, and migration; and encouraging civil society institutions to adopt more inclusive practices. Sawt operates in Yemen and Germany and seeks to expand its activities through cross-border partnerships in European, Arab, and international contexts. Its aim is to foster cultural exchange, support inclusive policies, and enable underrepresented groups to access regional and global platforms of influence. Furthermore, the foundation ensures that its digital platform is accessible to its diverse audience: the foundation’s website will be available in three languages – Arabic, English, and German – as a demonstration of its commitment to cultural diversity and as a guarantee to .convey its mission and strengthen its partnerships with a globally diverse audience
